Climate

The climate crisis isn’t tomorrow’s problem, it’s happening right now, and we are determined to make Mulberry part of the solution.

We are working to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 2035 across our direct (Scope 1 & 2) and indirect (Scope 3) operations.

Our near-term emissions reductions targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), underpinning our continued commitment to building a business that places sustainability at the heart of luxury.

Currently all emissions associated with both our UK operations and our purchased leather is offset through verified carbon credits from the World Land Trust – but offsetting alone is not a long-term solution.

We are focused on developing insetting initiatives that drive down our greenhouse gas footprint – initiatives that include building a supply chain founded on regenerative agriculture, and investing in renewable energy.

Progress

The Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) validated our near-term climate reduction targets.

Mulberry Group plc commits to reduce absolute scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions 37.8% by FY2028 from a FY2019 base year.

FLAG: Mulberry Group plc commits to reduce absolute scope 3 FLAG GHG emissions 33.3% by FY2030 from a FY2019 base year. Mulberry Group plc also commits to no deforestation across its primary deforestation-linked commodities, with a target date of December 31, 2025.

Over the last year, we reduced our UK greenhouse gas emissions across Scope 1 & 2 by 9.5%.

Since 2019, we have offset all carbon emissions associated with our UK operations (4462t CO2e) with our environmental charity partner, World Land Trust, supporting the REDD+ Project for Caribbean Guatemala: The Conservation Coast. The project aims to protect approximately 316,000 acres of tropical rainforest and other habitats to prevent the area from being cleared to make way for cropland and pasture.

We have invested in a 360kW solar photovoltaic array for the roof of The Willows, our second UK factory in Somerset. This will generate ten times more renewable electricity than the current system, which was installed during the factory build in 2013.

We have conducted a detailed life cycle analysis on two of our most popular bags, the Lily and the Bayswater, to allow us to make more informed decisions about our Scope 3 reduction strategy.

Our Somerset factories work with Zero Waste to Landfill providers, recovering energy from waste which cannot be reused or recycled.

We are a signatory of the UN Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action, with the primary mission of getting the fashion industry to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Lexicon

Green House Gas - any gas that when released into the Earth’s atmosphere traps heat including but not limited to Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitrous Oxide and Fluorocarbons.

Scope 1 and 2 emissions – emissions from our owned or directly operated facilities. (e.g. heating, cooling, and lighting in our factories, offices, and stores.)

Scope 3 emissions – emissions indirectly related to our activities (e.g. the emissions associated with tanning the leather used in our products)

Offsetting – investing in carbon storage solutions (e.g. through land restoration or the planting of trees), which are used to compensate for emissions that occur in our business.

Insetting - investing in climate change mitigation strategies within our own supply chain, such as regenerative agriculture and renewable energy production.
